Surfing as an Art Form

Surfing as an Art Form

Every surfer is an artist

Every wave a blank canvas

Every surfboard is a paintbrush

Every turn a stroke of that brush

Surfboards are as myriad as painter’s brushes

Surfers as artists, each unique in their approach

Hence, every wave ever ridden by all surfers

Has been a unique expression of an artist’s hand

Skill levels vary, as much as stylistic approaches

Demanding boards of varying shapes and sizes

Each creating it’s unique path, sweeping, carving

Across the empty, beckoning face of each wave

No two waves break alike and never have

Thus, no two rides have ever been the same

There is no right, or wrong, good, or bad

As it is a personal interpretation all one’s own

Therein lies the magic, the beauty that disappears

As each wave subsides, forever erasing every canvas

Only the eternal surging energy briefly sculpted

By the creativity of our hearts and minds

About me, your humble founder and author of the above. I grew up living on the beach, in Malibu, California. I have been surfing since I was 8 years old, so almost 6 decades now. I moved to the North Shore of Oahu in the winter of 1977, when I was 18 years old, to try my hand at competing. I never finished better than 3rd in my heat, but to put it in perspective, the guys that beat me in that heat were Dane Kealoha and Michael Ho, who both went on to be legends. I even shaped boards for my friends in my teens. I have always been interested in the underlying science and design that makes surfboards work. In my 30’s, I started a surf school in Malibu that ran for well over 20 years, called “Malibu Mike’s” a nickname I got in High School. I have taught literally thousands of people how to surf, and even coached surfers from their first wave, to winning competitions. I have owned multiple surf related businesses, surf shops, etc., which is how I originally got involved with Surftech.

Surfing is not only an art form, it is a sport, even a lifestyle, and it is also a business, that is now a large and thriving global industry. But that said, I came to India with my wife, a spiritual teacher, to follow a spiritual path, not to be in another business.

I started Surf Source to fill a huge void, and supply much needed top quality surfing equipment to the local surfers and surf schools across India. I am looking forward to the day that I can return my full focus to my spiritual aspirations. But until then, I consider it a privilege and a blessing to be able to share my 60 or so years of surfing experience with the ever-expanding surf community of India.

If you have read what I have written above, you will understand that we at Surf Source are in the “Brush Business.” We sell top quality “brushes” (surfboards) helping you, and every other surfer, whether you are a first-time beginner, or a top professional, paint your most beautiful canvases. "Cowabunga!"

In gratitude,

Michael Avatar
