Squash Tail

Squash Tail: Squashes are Square Tails with rounded corners. They proved a wide tail, with more parallel rails in the tail than say, a Pintail, or even a Rounded Pintail. They have been common on performance shortboards for many decades now. They provide an ideal platform for “back-foot” performance surfing, which is done “in the pocket,” or in the critical part of the wave, with the surfer’s back foot typically on a traction pad. They are responsive, and generate drive. They also provide a perfect platform for launching ariel maneuvers. As you will see, both of our highest performance shortboard shapers, Timmy Patterson and Duke Aipa use Squash Tails on virtually all of their performance shortboards.

Timmy Patterson: From left to right, 1. We have the Gas Pedal, Timmy Patterson’s standard shortboard, as you can see, the rails curve nicely to a smaller Squash Tail. 2. we have the Synthetic ’84, Timmy’s smaller wave performance board. This board has a “Bump” which leads into a wider Squash Tail. This will be very loose, yet fast, with the more parallel rails, created by the wider tail and the bump to provide release near the back foot. Italo Ferriera rides this board in the WSL. 3. We have the “Alley Rat,” Timmy’s competition and team rider model. This board is narrower and thinner overall, giving it an ultra-responsive, pulled in Squash Tail, that still provides incredible drive.

Aipa: On the left, 4. We have the “Super Nova,” which is their all-new “groveler” made for small waves, even wave pools. It has long, parallel rails until you reach the bump, where it begins tapering into a wide Squash Tail. This is an “air machine” in my personal opinion.

5. Aipa’s high performance shortboard, the “Dark Twinn.” You can see more curve in the rails as they approach the tail, leading to a more pronounced bump, (more of a “Wing”) and a pulled in Squash Tail, which is the closest board in our current catalog to a “Thumb Tail,” which would be completely round, like a thumb. This is an all-around performance board, for almost any conditions.
